We've all seen the guitar super stars with their guitar slung down low. For some reason we think it looks cool. Standing up there on stage with your Les Paul slung down low blasting out stunning lead guitar solos. It looks so cool and so easy. The truth is, it's not as easy as it looks. As you start learning to play the guitar you will probably start in a sitting position. You with your guitar in your lap and your music on a music stand in front of you. Or if you are taking private lessons your instructor is most likely sitting across from you. That's why so many guitarists say it's so much easier to play when I'm sitting.
Is it really easier to play sitting down and how often will you perform sitting down? There are some situations where you might perform sitting down. Some of the intimate coffee house settings might offer you a stool to sit on as you perform. But for the most part you will be standing when you play guitar in a performance. Be it in a band or as a solo performer you will be standing ninety eight percent of the time with your guitar. The best thing you can do is to learn standing up. That's right. Get rid of the chair or the stool and stand up when you practice. How frustrating is it to sit and learn a guitar part and then stand up and try to play it just like you did when you were sitting down.
Your entire posture and approach to the neck of the guitar has changed. So naturally the way you play is going to feel very different. It may actually feel awkward and uncomfortable. Make a point of learning on your feet. Forget about trying to look cool with the low slung guitar super star pose. Put your guitar on in a standing position and adjust the strap to different positions until you find the position that is most comfortable for you. Learning to play standing up with your guitar in a comfortable position will speed up your learning process. You will develop a much better performance approach to the neck of the guitar. You will also notice that your strum hand approach will be much different when you are standing than when you are sitting. Often times when you are sitting you will use your strum hand arm and elbow to hold the guitar to your body as you play.
This restricts your range of motion when strumming or picking. You will notice that you have a much broader range of motion when strumming or picking in a standing position. You will actually develop a much better strumming and picking technique when you stand. So stand up, strap on your guitar and your confidence, take command and play that guitar the way you were meant to.
