Firstly you have to simply believe in yourself and start to see yourself performing at the level you really yearn to attain, immerse yourself in getting to know new abilities, improve on your song composing, theory and improvising know how at every opportunity. You have to attempt to picture yourself playing at the peak of your desired ability level and drawing the recognition and admiration you realize you deserve for all the time and effort you have put in over the years. So is envisaging yourself performing superbly having applied all the essential work and effort.
It's Important To have confidence in yourself and that you will rehearse, you will play with a lot of other musicians, you will learn loads of brand new abilities and that success will be yours as you are just never going to give up. Remain resolute and focused and it will be so.
Carry on learning every new skill and relevant scale and song that you can.
Practice and be passionate about it. While you are practising try to give it all your attention, you need to discover which pieces of any given song or piece are easy and which parts are the most demanding. These are the parts you should concentrate on and conquer once and for all.
You need to go through the tricky part many times at the slowest speed you can endure and concentrate on playing it perfectly before gradually speeding it up, use a metronome if you have one, then you will be able to play it at the same speed as the rest of the song and then go on to the next challenging part that needs practice.
Never miss an opportunity to play with other musicians, surround yourself with musicians who are at a higher level than yourself and pick their brains whenever you can, they had to work hard to get to the level they're at and most of the time you will find they will be happy to help you to progress.
Also be prepared to help other players who are at a lower level to improve as well, you will find that teaching can be as much a learning experience for you as well!
Never pass up on the chance to play with musicians who play something other than guitar, it will benefit your musicianship in many ways.
It's a good idea to start getting lessons from a guitar tutor. Discuss the idea of setting targets or goals and how to get to those goals with your tutor, if you have one. Record your playing and keep to listen to later, you will be able to hear for yourself just how much you have improved over time. Invest in, beg, steel or borrow some decent jam tracks or backing tracks, they are great to practise along with.. They will help you to play more precisely and at the correct tempo, plus you will know the structure of the song better as a result.also it will force you to play songs from beginning to end rather than just the easy bits. You need to focus specifically on the type of playing you want to be really good at and prioritise your learning and practising in that direction. You have to specialise in your own particular niche or style in order to get really good at it, nobody has enough time in their lives to be excellent at every style so you have to be aware of this and strive to be efficient. SPECIALIZE!
Take no notice of people who tell you in order to become a "well rounded musician" you have to learn as much as you can about EVERYTHING about guitar playing, this is rubbish and misleading. Natural musician? Never met one. Just more garbage, I'm afraid. Sure, some people do have skills or abilities that others are not as good as, but it's all for nothing if you don't work at improving, constantly. there is simply no substitute for persistence and hard work, every great player knows that.
