You have a burning desire to play the guitar and write your own songs. You can just feel those songs inside of you waiting to come out. If only you knew how to play the guitar so that you could write those awesome songs. But you're not feeling drawn to be a lead guitar player. That's OK. Some of the greatest guitar song writers weren't lead guitar players. Bob Dylan, John Lennon of the Beatles, David Crosby of the Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Graham Nash of the Hollies and also Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Paul Kantner of the Jefferson Airplane and the Jefferson Starship, John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, James Taylor, Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel, and of course Jon Bon Jovi are all great songwriters who aren't known as lead guitar players.
It's perfectly alright to just want to play rhythm guitar and sing and write songs. There's just something so magical about sitting down with your guitar and coming up with a really captivating chord progression and then developing a chorus and maybe a catchy bridge to transition with. Songwriting is an amazing gift and if you have it you have to get a guitar and start bringing those songs to life.
Sometimes it seems like the pressure is on to become a flashy lead guitar player. It can make you feel like you're not a complete guitar player unless you play lead. Don't let that kind of thinking push you in the wrong direction. Some guitar players have no desire to play lead and can actually become discouraged and quit, thinking that they're not good enough. Don't let that happen to you. Just learn your chords and start writing those songs. Remember, a great lead guitar player doesn't always make a great songwriter.
When I first started learning all those years ago I got some song books of my favorite song writers and bands. Credence Clearwater Revival, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and others. As I started learning those songs I started seeing how those guys wrote those songs. I started seeing how they put chord structures and choruses together. And soon enough my own songs started coming together when I played. You can also take some song writing instruction to help you become the songwriter you desire to be.
Playing rhythm guitar has a feeling all of it's own. There's this gut level power that comes with playing the driving rhythm of a great rock song locked in with the bass and drums. Lead guitarists aren't the only guitar heroes. Stay true to that gift inside. I just want to play rhythm guitar, and that's just fine.
