What to Do and What Not to Do When Starting to Play Guitar

To learn to play guitar online is a fabulous experience and there are a couple of things to take into account when starting to play guitar, most of the time are simple things, but these simple things can make a huge difference at the beginning and most people take them for granted. It is a fact that many new guitar players quit within the first 3 months because they feel frustrated, and I want to help you to avoid that by giving you important tips on how to start playing guitar.

There is a Buddhist quote that I like a lot that says: "when the student is ready, the master appears", now, I'm not trying to say that I?m the master that knows it all, but based on my personal experience as a guitarist and as a guitar teacher I want to point out a few things that will help you on this journey of becoming a musician.

Let me go ahead and start mentioning the three things that you need to do to learn guitar the easy and fun way:

1. Get your own guitar. This is really important because you are going to start creating a sense of responsibility; the reason I mention this is because if you decide to start playing with someone else's guitar, you are not going to take it as seriously as if it was your own instrument, because it did not cost you anything to get it. So, the first thing you need to do is to go out and get your own guitar.

2. Make time to practice. Now, this might seem pretty obvious, but the fact is that many people fail because they don?t plan ahead time to practice every day, specially the first two or three weeks, which is the time your fingers need to get used to the strings and for you to feel comfortable with your guitar.

3. Get a guitar course to follow. For this point, I want to share with you my personal experience. When I was about 12 years old a cousin of mine showed me how to play guitar chords, and that's all I learned from him, so I spent almost a year playing the same songs because I never followed a course. Then I decided to improve my skills, so I took classes with a private tutor, and those classes were very expensive by the way and I realized how much I had been missing from the guitar.

That being said let me point out the main three things you must not do when starting to play guitar:

1. Do not start with a damaged guitar. Try to get a decent guitar to start learning, the reason this is important is because your hearing will get used to the sound of that guitar, and you might believe that the way you play it is the correct way it should sound.

2. Do not get an electric guitar first. You will feel more pain on an electric guitar than if you start playing on a classical guitar. Playing an electric guitar might lead you to frustration and that is exactly what we are trying to avoid.

3. Do not leave your guitar alone for long periods of time. It's ok to skip one day of practice, we all have several things to do every day, but do not make a habit out this because otherwise you'll find yourself playing the same song, over and over again. I know that because it happened to me.

I encourage you to find an easy to follow course online and to practice as often as you can, you will find that playing guitar is a very fun hobby and relaxing too. I hope you find this article useful and I wish you the best. Good luck and have a great day.
